Spot versus Junior?
Dogs as smart as two year olds!

Except afghan hounds!

Dog kindergarten

Would include counting and words

Along with nap time.

Makes me feel sorry for afghan hounds, though they're cute anyway! Read more here about the genius of dogs.

  1. Interesting article. Thanks for the link. Poor Afghans. Could be that their heads are so narrow -- not much room for brains. There's a theory that as humans and dogs evolved together and grew to depend on each other, humans gained more brain power and lost acuity in senses like smell, while dogs kept their sensory power. I often thought that our Labrador retriever was in some ways smarter than we were. He certainly could outfox us, as can the cat.

  2. This was adorable. The picture of the dog with the glasses is a nice touch. I feel bad for the Afghans, too, but sometimes ignorance is bliss!
I've known many dogs that probably could not count to five, but they were happy! (I wonder how pugs measured up in the test.)

  3. How are border collies at the "head of the class"????? My fiance's brohter had one and she was the stupidest and meanest dog ever! Okay, so she'd listen when you told her to do something. BUT, then a minute later she'd get up and do exactly what you just told her not to. Same goes for beagles: Cute, but they do not listen.
My sister's golden is amazing. Once we were at the shore and they'd just come in from a walk. My sister says, "I'm sorry you don't have your big fan here (at home he stands with his head directly in front of a fan when he's hot). Go lie on the air conditioning vent." He walks right over to it and lies down with his head at the floor vent. Genius! Now it's his favorite spot at the shore house.

  4. I have a Scottie who I think is very smart, but one factor these doggie intelligence tests don't seem to account for is the disposition of the breed. Scotties are known to be very smart but stubborn, so my dog probably knows what he's supposed to do, he just doesn't feel like it.

  5. Cute poem and picture! Thanks for the link. I think dogs are smart in their own doggie way and these types of tests only measure them by what humans consider to be "intelligent." My cats do things I might consider stupid (like attempt to jump from floor to banister and slip off), but I'm sure they have some reason for doing it (maybe their perfecting their jumping skills, or just plain having fun).

  6. Great picture! Is he nearsighted or farsighted?

The article was informative and interesting.

  7. Sometimes I think my dog is a genius. When I visit my family in Connecticut, he always seems to know when we've turned the last corner. And he can always seem to guess when I'm going to take him and when he has to hang back-- just, I think, by the way I walk to the door!

  8. Some random guy was talking about this news story today. He was debating with his girlfriend on whether their pooch could count to five.

  9. I don't even know how I'd begin to test that in my dog! He'd think I was crazy!
